PREVENTING CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING • Service all heating systems and all gas-, oil- or coal-burning appliances by a technician annually. • Install a battery-operated and electric-powered carbon monoxide detector in your home and check or replace the battery when you change the time on your clocks each spring and fall. If the detector sounds, leave your home immediately and call 911. • Contact a doctor if you believe you have carbon monoxide poisoning. • Do not use gas-powered devices such as a generator, grill or stove inside your home, basement or near a near a window or door. Generators should be operated more than 15 feet from the home. • Do not run any gas-powered motor inside a closed structure, such as a garage. • Do not heat a home with a gas oven. November 6---Two candidates with ties to the IAFF and the PFFM were elected to the Maine House of Representatives on Tuesday, November 4. Representative Benjamin Marriner Pratt, D-Eddington, was reelected to represent House District 20, which covers the towns of Bradley, Brewer, Clifton, Dedham, Eddington and Holden. Rep. Pratt was recently hired by the Town of Orono as a Firefighter/EMT and is a member of IAFF Local 3106. During the 123 rd Legislature Rep. Pratt served on the Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry Committee. Congratulations to Brother Pratt on his reelection to office. Retired Lewiston Fire Chief Mike Lajoie was elected to represent House District 71, which covers part of the city of Lewiston. Representative-elect Lajoie was a driving force behind the successful passage of LD 1021, which pays a subsidy for health care to retired public safety employees. Chief Lajoie partnered with the PFFM as the liaison for the Maine Fire Chiefs Association as part of the coalition that worked the bill. While a firefighter in Lewiston, Lajoie served on Local 785’s executive board then rose through the ranks to become Chief of the department. Both Rep. Pratt and Rep.-elect Lajoie will be strong advocates for the safety and concerns of Maine’s 1 st responders while serving in the House. The PFFM and its members congratulate them on their well deserved victories.
