Accidental Death Benefit Rule Adopted by MPERS
Posted On: Jan 16, 2011
The Board of Directors for MPERS, at their January 13, 2011 meeting, formally adopted the Rule for the implementation of the Accidental Death Benefit for the Beneficiaries of Deceased Firefighters. This was the final step in a journey that started almost five years ago with the death of a brother from Lewiston Local 785 who died from a heart attack after a working fire. In the last Legislative Session the statue was enacted that enabled the beneficiaries of a firefighter who died within thirty days of a fire or training that involved fighting fire due to cardiovascular or pulmonary disease, to be awarded an Accidental Death Benefit from the pension system. If the firefighter dies from thirty days up to six months after the event there is a rebuttable presumption that he/she died as a result of that incident. An Accidental Death Benefit recognizes that the employee died as a result of an injury that happened while on the job and in most cases will provide an increased benefit.
We are very fortunate that the situation for the award of this benefit is rare. However, families will now have the comfort of knowing that they will have some measure of financial security in the event their loved one dies in the line of duty. The PFFM would like to acknowledge the hard work of Local 785 President Rick Cailler and all it's members who have worked so hard over these years to realize this day. We would also like to thank all the PFFM members who gave of their time to come to Augusta and make sure our elected officials new the importance of moving this legislation forward. Although there is nothing that can take the place of a loved while makes the ultimate sacrifice, this is a small step in taking care of those left behind.
