Burn camp offers solace to kids
Aug 22, 2011

Union, Conn. (WTNH) - The Children's Burn Camp in Union provides a place where kids can just be kids.

The camp is only open for one week a year. But for the campers, what they achieve, what they accomplish and what they remember will last a lifetime.

The children come from up and down the East Coast and are referred by their doctors or hospitals. The age range is 8 to 18 and many make it a summertime ritual.

"I visit and meet new friends There's a lot of new stuff every year. I just like to have fun," said camper Ebony Bryant from Maryland.

It's also a safe place where there is no judgement.

"Not being ashamed of yourself," said camper Raekwon. "People stare and point, but not here. Everybody is the same."

The majority of the counselors are current and former firefighters. The give of their time because they understand how difficult life can be. And what they get in return, well, it's almost too overwhelming to describe.

"They look at us like, oh you're a fireman, or an EMT or a nurse but, they don't realize that their impact on ourselves," said retired Bridgeport firefighter Bo Diaz.

The kids may not be able to get rid of the scars they carry on their body, but after spending a week here it's clear that the camp helps ease any scars in their heart.
